What this solves
Namibia's ATM coverage is excellent by African standards — FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank, Bank Windhoek and Capricorn are everywhere — but the fee structure varies by home bank. Withdrawing from your own bank's ATM is often free; using another bank's is N$ 30-50 + your bank's foreign-transaction fee (1-3%). Over a 14-day trip, you can pay N$ 400+ just in ATM fees if you pick the wrong bank.
This tool takes your town, your home bank (or home country), and returns: which ATM in that town is the cheapest for you, what to expect per withdrawal, and whether to use credit or debit.
It is not a bank. Banks charge what they charge; this tool helps you pick the cheapest ATM for your situation.
Where are you and what's your home bank?
How to read the results
- "Recommended ATM" picks the lowest effective fee. Includes the local ATM's fee + your bank's foreign transaction fee (FTF). It assumes a N$ 2,000 withdrawal.
- Card-type matters. Debit cards use your bank's exchange rate (mid-market or wholesale, often 0.5-1.5% better than credit). Credit cards charge ~2-3% FTF unless you have a "no-FTF" card.
- Cash advance ≠ ATM withdrawal. A credit card "cash advance" at an ATM is more expensive than debit; we generally recommend debit.
- Town coverage varies. Okaukuejo, Halali, Opuwo and Katima Mulilo have limited ATM choice. Plan accordingly.
Limitations
- ATM fees from your bank are out of date the moment this page loads. Confirm with your bank's app before relying on it.
- Town coverage data is approximate. Verify presence at the gate or hotel reception.
- This tool does not cover dynamic currency conversion (DCC). DCC charges you in your home currency at poor rates. The right answer is always "charge in NAD."
- ATM downtime (broken ATM, network issues) is common in remote towns. Always have a backup.
- Etosha camps' ATMs are inside the camp, after park gates. Withdraw before entering the park.
FAQ
Will my SA-issued Visa/Mastercard work at any Namibian ATM?
Yes. Visa and Mastercard are global networks; your bank determines acceptance. Some SA-issued cards are not enabled for international transactions; verify with your bank before travel.
What about Capitec specifically?
Capitec's Global One card is a strong choice: no monthly fees, free withdrawals from any ATM in the Common Monetary Area (Namibia, SA, Lesotho, Eswatini). Withdrawing N$ 2,000 from a Namibian ATM with a Capitec card costs effectively 0.
Are there ATMs in Etosha parks?
Yes — at Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni camps. These are FNB-branded ATMs but inside the camp (after gate check). Withdrawing before gates saves a re-entry stop.
Should I bring traveller's cheques?
No. Almost no one accepts them in 2026. Cash (any major currency) or cards are universal.
