What this solves
Namib-Naukluft National Park is the largest protected area in Namibia and the third-largest in Africa. Its fee structure is also one of the most confusing for visitors: per-person international vs SADC rates, per-vehicle daily fees, a separate Sossusvlei 4x4 shuttle to Deadvlei, and an optional Namib section permit that is rarely visited. Most visitors pay for Sesriem+Sossusvlei and stop there — missing Hiddenvlei and the Namib Mountain section, which are dramatically quieter and equally photogenic.
This tool takes your trip length, party size, vehicle type, and sections visited — and returns the per-section and total fees, with the 2026 reference rates and the things that catch self-drivers (sand-tire waiver, fuel surcharge, second-vehicle tail).
Fees have been raised twice since 2020 — SADC and international rates diverge sharply. The math below uses 2026 reference rates; always cross-check at the gate.

How to read the results
- Per-person fees are daily and apply to every day you enter the park. Most self-drivers pay for 2-3 days.
- The vehicle fee is once-per-day per entry. If you exit and re-enter the gate, you may pay twice.
- The Sossusvlei shuttle is the N$40+ per-person shuttle that takes you from the Sossusvlei parking to the 5 km last 4x4-only section to Deadvlei. Self-driving 4x4s skip this; 2WDs are forced to take it.
- Wildcards and conservation fees are not counted here. If you visit ≥3 NWR parks, the N$3,000 international Wild Card pays off. See the Park Fee Wildcard Decoder.
Limitations
- Fees are updated annually. NWR publishes fee changes each March; the figures below use 2026 reference rates.
- Some travelers qualify for SADC rates they didn't know about. Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, Mozambique and Tanzania residents pay roughly half the international rate.
- The Hiddenvlei access track is part of the Namib section and requires a separate permit (not always checked). Going without one is technically illegal.
- Self-driving 4x4 to Deadvlei is not permitted without explicit permission from NWR; in practice most self-drivers who go pay for the shuttle anyway because the permit process is unclear.
- Credit card acceptance at Sesriem gate is intermittent. Bring NAD backups — declare in advance that you need a few backups at each gate site.
FAQ
Is the NWR Wild Card worth it for one Sossusvlei trip?
For one Namib-Naukluft trip, no. The Wild Card (N$3,000 international) only pays off if you're visiting 3+ NWR parks in 12 months. For just Sossusvlei, the daily fees are cheaper.
Do kids under 8 really enter free?
Yes — both international and SADC rate. Drivers license not required for the kids. Just declare at the gate. The 8-and-over threshold applies to international rates; check with NWR for the latest cutoff.
Can I self-drive 4x4 to Deadvlei?
Technically yes with a free "self-drive permit" issued at the gate, but the rule is unclear, the shuttle workers dislike it, and you still pay the SunTrust. Most 4x4 self-drivers pay the shuttle and skip the argument.
Are the fees different at weekends?
No. The fees are the same every day. The shuttle may run less often on Sunday mornings, however. The gates close at sunset regardless.

About this tool
What it is: a calculator that stacks the 2026 Namib-Naukluft park fees across multiple sections, by party size, vehicle, and visitor status.
Who it's for: self-drivers planning a 2-5 day Sossusvlei stay who want to budget the per-section fees before they get to the gate.
Who it isn't for: visitors looking for the absolute lowest-cost trip (NWR publishes official fees; the campaign isn't here).
Limitations: covered above. The fees are 2026 reference numbers; always verify the current rate at the NWR Reservation Fees page.
